The success of our military, and indeed, our nation as a whole, is rooted in the dynamism, courage and sacrifice demonstrated by generations of immigrants who have answered the call of duty.

Since the birth of our democracy, immigrants from all corners of the world have fought for American independence and defended our ideals. As of May 2013, more than 30,000 lawful permanent residents were serving in our Armed Forces. This Administration recognizes that to selflessly commit yourself to defending a country that is not yet fully your own is to act beyond the call of duty. Today, we thank our immigrant veterans for protecting and strengthening their adopted homeland.

Elizabeth “Liz” Perez-Halperin, a Wounded Warrior veteran and White House Champion of Change, is a shining example of the drive immigrants bring to our Armed Forces. Liz’s father joined the U.S. military shortly after immigrating to the United States from Mexico. He came to this country in search of the American Dream, and compelled by its promise, chose to serve under its flag.

Sharing a similar sense of patriotism, Liz followed in her father’s footsteps and decided to work for the U.S. Navy. For eight years she was in charge of refueling aircrafts and through that experience, came to realize that our national security was inextricably linked to our oil dependency. Using the knowledge she gained in the Navy, she founded GC Green Incorporated, a company that provides job training and placement assistance to veterans in the renewable energy industry. Her efforts remind us that the contributions of our servicemen and women don’t end when they take off their uniform, and nor should our dedication to their continued success.

Story URL:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2013/11/11/honoring-legacy-immigrants-serving-arm...

<a href= Arlington Bush Immigration Mexico Mexico Official Rahul Jindal Rand Beers Tanya Bradsher United States United States Veterans White House Mon, 11 Nov 2013 20:15:06 +0000 feed 196909 at http://newsmotion.org 'Joining Forces' with You on Veterans Day http://newsmotion.org/feed-story-en/joining-forces-you-veterans-day

'Joining Forces' with You on Veterans Day

Mon, 11/11/2013

Ed. note: The following op-ed by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden appeared this morning on the following military news websites: Military Times, Army Times, Air Force Times, Marine Corps Times, and Navy Times.

Over the past five years, the two of us have had the privilege of traveling across America and around the world to visit with our extraordinary troops, veterans and military families — and time and again, we have been awed by your service and sacrifice.

We’ve been overwhelmed by the courage of our wounded warriors and the devotion of the caregivers who stand by their side. And we’ve seen how, even after transitioning to civilian life, our veterans and military families continue to serve, volunteering countless hours in your communities for all sorts of important causes.

That’s why, 2½ years ago, we decided that it was our obligation not only to tell you how much we appreciate everything you do for our country, but to show you by stepping up and giving you and your families the honor, recognition and support you’ve earned. That’s how Joining Forces was born.

The goal of this initiative was to rally all Americans to step up and serve you as well as you have served this country. We challenged individuals, organizations and businesses across the country to make real, meaningful commitments to you and your families. And from the very beginning, we have been overwhelmed by the response. Here are just a few examples:

Employment: It is simply unacceptable that men and women who serve this country so bravely abroad often struggle to find a good job once they return home. Our veterans are some of the most highly-skilled, hardest-working employees around. They thrive in fast-paced, high-pressure environments, and they’ve got extensive experience building teams, managing complex logistics, and dealing with cutting-edge technology.

Story URL:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2013/11/11/joining-forces-you-veterans-day

Dr. Jill Biden First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden Jill Biden Joining Forces Michelle Obama Official Steven Ferraro The First Lady Veterans White House Mon, 11 Nov 2013 17:54:35 +0000 feed 197542 at http://newsmotion.org Veterans History Project: Help Tell the Story of Our Nation's Veterans http://newsmotion.org/feed-story-en/veterans-history-project-help-tell-story-our-nations-veterans

Veterans History Project: Help Tell the Story of Our Nation's Veterans

Mon, 11/11/2013

Approximately 17 million American war veterans are living in the United States today.

Every one of them has a story.

For the past 13 years, the Veterans History Project (VHP) has been collecting the oral histories and personal documents of America’s war veterans, to ensure their stories are preserved in the Library of Congress so that future generations may better understand the realities of war.

To date, nearly 90,000 stories have been collected by volunteers nationwide.

Using the VHP Field Kit, which is a how-to-collect-a-story booklet, thousands of volunteers have interviewed veterans in their communities about their experiences. Dr. Biden is a lifelong educator and proud Blue Star mom. She currently teaches full time at a community college in Virginia and is a champion for military families, including through her work with First Lady Michelle Obama and Joining Forces.

We also congratulated the 1 millionth beneficiary of this landmark program, who is a great representative of the Post-9/11 Veteran generation; which has sacrificed so much for our country. This GI Bill program is just one small way our nation can say “thank you” to these men and women for their service.

Story URL:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2013/11/08/va-serves-one-millionth-post-911-gi-bi...

Allison A.
