Many consider President Thomas Jefferson to be the first President to host an Iftar dinner, as he hosted a sunset dinner to accommodate the fasts of an envoy from Tunisia over 200 years ago.</p> <p>The Iftar is the meal after sunset that concludes the day of fasting during the month of Ramadan, a time to pray and reflect, to be reminded that we are equals in humanity, and to reaffirm commitments to helping the less fortunate, including those struggling from economic hardship and inequality.</p> <p>Last night, guests were welcomed into the East Wing where a copy of the Quran owned by President Thomas Jefferson, one of the founding fathers of the United States, was on display from the Library of Congress. At sunset, guests gathered in the Grand Foyer to break their fast with a date following the traditional melodic Muslim call to prayer led by a local student from the University of Maryland. Then finally, after a 16-hour day of fasting since sunrise, guests gathered in the State Dining Room for a halal meal with the President.</p> <p><a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2014/07/15/president-obama-hosts-iftar-dinner-white-house" target="_blank">read more</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Story URL:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2014/07/15/president-obama-hosts-iftar-dinner-white-house" target="_blank">http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2014/07/15/president-obama-hosts-iftar-dinner-whi...</a> </div> </div> </div> Amanda Lucidon Barack Obama Chicago Hillary Clinton Inside the White House Jill DeWitt Kelly Carlisle Maryland Maryland Muhammed Chaudhry Official Rumana Ahmed Sudan The President Thomas Jefferson Tunisia Tunisia United States United States White House Tue, 15 Jul 2014 20:33:58 +0000 feed 306976 at http://newsmotion.org West Wing Week 07/11/14 or, "Responding to Your Letter...In Person!" http://newsmotion.org/feed-story-en/west-wing-week-071114-or-responding-your-letterin-person <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> West Wing Week 07/11/14 or, &quot;Responding to Your Letter...In Person!&quot; </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-datetime field-field-date"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <span class="date-display-single">Fri, 07/11/2014</span> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-teaser"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>This Fourth of July week, the President welcomed some newly naturalized Americans, and spent time with middle-class Americans in Denver and Austin, while Dr. Jill Biden wrapped up a week-long trip to Africa.&nbsp;</p> <p></p> <p class="rteright"><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYjtieZkY74">Watch on YouTube</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Story URL:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2014/07/11/west-wing-week-071114-or-responding-your-letterin-person" target="_blank">http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2014/07/11/west-wing-week-071114-or-responding-yo...</a> </div> </div> </div> <a href= Adam Garber Austin Denver Denver Dr. Jill Biden Inside the White House Jill Biden Official The President White House Sat, 12 Jul 2014 00:00:23 +0000 feed 305729 at http://newsmotion.org Here's How the White House Celebrates the Fourth of July: http://newsmotion.org/feed-story-en/heres-how-white-house-celebrates-fourth-july <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Here&#039;s How the White House Celebrates the Fourth of July: </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-datetime field-field-date"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <span class="date-display-single">Thu, 07/03/2014</span> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-teaser"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Tomorrow&#39;s the Fourth of July, and we&#39;re pretty excited about it here at the White House.</p> <p>To celebrate the holiday, the President and First Lady are inviting military heroes and their families to the White House tomorrow for a special Independence Day event, including a USO program featuring Grammy award-winning recording artist Pitbull.</p> <p>But you don&#39;t need to be on the South Lawn to enjoy the show!
