The President and First Lady know this first hand -- they only finished paying off their student loans 10 years ago -- and that&rsquo;s why they have made it a priority to help make college more affordable for families. They have taken action to reform student loans, expand grants and college tax credits, help make loan payments more manageable, and have proposed plans to make sure colleges also do their part to bring down costs. And just this week, as part of the President&rsquo;s Year of Action, the administration announced a new series of commitments to support students who need a little extra academic help getting through college.</p> <p></p> <p><a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2014/08/15/weekly-address-everyone-should-be-able-afford-higher-education">Transcript</a> | <a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/WeeklyAddress/2014/081614-WXBCYF/081614_WeeklyAddress.mp4">mp4</a> | <a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/WeeklyAddress/2014/081614-WXBCYF/081614_WeeklyAddress.mp3">mp3</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Story URL:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2014/08/16/weekly-address-everyone-should-be-able-afford-higher-education" target="_blank">http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2014/08/16/weekly-address-everyone-should-be-able...</a> </div> </div> </div> <a href= Amanda Lucidon Barack Obama College Affordability Education Higher Education Iraq Lawrence Jackson Lindsay Holst Obama Makes Official Tanya Somanader The President United States Weekly Address White House Sat, 16 Aug 2014 10:00:00 +0000 feed 319603 at http://newsmotion.org New Commitments to Improve College Opportunity http://newsmotion.org/feed-story-en/new-commitments-improve-college-opportunity <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> New Commitments to Improve College Opportunity </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-datetime field-field-date"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <span class="date-display-single">Wed, 08/13/2014</span> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-teaser"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Last January, I listened to the President ask hundreds of college presidents to increase college opportunity for all Americans. And of the 30 fastest growing occupations, half require a college degree. At the same time, college graduates earn an average of 77 percent more per hour than a high school graduate.&nbsp;President Obama set forth a goal early in his first term to guide our work in education &ndash; to lead the world with the highest proportion of college graduates by 2020.&nbsp;</p> <p>And yesterday, I had the privilege of joining Secretary Duncan in meeting with community college leaders who have made new commitments to ensure student success, because, in order to make progress on our goal to be first in the world, we need to embrace some of the foundational challenges to college enrollment, persistence, and completion.&nbsp;</p> <p>Our nation&rsquo;s community colleges are the engines of our higher education system. Over the past five years, the Administration has been listening to students tell their stories and has taken steps to help &ndash; including increasing the maximum Pell Grant by about $1,000 and providing loan repayment options like Pay As You Earn, which caps monthly payments at an amount that based on how much you&rsquo;re making so student loan bills are more manageable.</p> <p>But we want to do more. That&rsquo;s why today, Dexter joined more than a dozen recent graduates, education advocates, economists, and college presidents for a discussion with Dr. Jill Biden and Education Secretary Arne Duncan at the White House about college affordability and student loans.</p> <p>&ldquo; It&rsquo;s the story of many people my age across the country,&rdquo; Dexter said. &ldquo; It&rsquo;s really important to me that the White House is taking steps to address this issue.&rdquo;</p> <p><a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2014/06/05/college-affordability-and-student-loans-discussed-white-house-roundtable-event" target="_blank">read more</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-link field-field-url"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="field-label-inline-first"> Story URL:&nbsp;</div> <a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2014/06/05/college-affordability-and-student-loans-discussed-white-house-roundtable-event" target="_blank">http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2014/06/05/college-affordability-and-student-loan...</a> </div> </div> </div> Arne Duncan Boston College Affordability Dexter McCoy Dr. Jill Biden Higher Education Jill Biden Official Sara Gast Sara Gast White House Thu, 05 Jun 2014 22:37:18 +0000 feed 290701 at http://newsmotion.org
